Spring has sprung! One of our favorite practices in Spring is clearing out spaces to make room for new ideas, new inspiration, and new things! Honestly, organizing and getting rid of things is one of our favorite things to do (did you know we provide it as a service?!). It helps to refocus, reinvigorate, and makes us feel lighter overall . While we think this practice of letting go is important in all aspects of your life, we will be focusing on STUFF, the things that have accumulated in your house that may not be serving you any longer. So how do you begin the daunting task of decluttering and getting rid of things? Read some of our favorite tips.
Focus on one room at a time - Spring Cleaning does not need to happen in a day! As a matter of fact, it shouldn't. Do one room at a time so you can fully go through everything you have in that space. Make sure to give yourself enough time to complete a room, because we go by the method, it’s going to get worse before it gets better.
Take EVERYTHING out - We mean everything. Empty drawers, cabinets, under the bed. This will really show how much stuff you have, and will make you to put it back in an organized and sensible way. You do not have to do all the drawers at the same time, rather go space by space, and take everything out to go through all the items. We don’t want any dead batteries falling through the cracks.
Look at each item - Once everything is out of the drawers, you will be able to evaluate each item individually. Some will be obvious to get rid of, ie. expired food, clothes with rips or stains, broken electronics. Some may take more thought and consideration. We recommend looking at each item and thinking about how much you used it in the past year. If the answer is not frequently, chances are you don’t need it.
Organize the things you are getting rid of - We like to have 4 categories of the items we are ready to part with - trash, recycle, donate, sell. Your categories may be different, but whatever they are, it is always beneficial to have them in place before you start piling up all your things! We don’t want to have to organize from our organizing after the fact.
Hope this serves as the inspiration to get you started on your organization journey. Happy Cleaning!! Trust us…it will feel GREAT.
